Ever consider how lucky we are to be living in such a beautiful area near the water?
Southport is a gorgeous community, and the city works hard to keep it that way. Tucked into numerous corners of this town are little parks and public venues — all primarily maintained by city workers who do a wonderful job. But there are also unseen volunteers quietly rounding out that work, and they deserve some recognition.
The Beautification Committee
Southport's Beautification Committee is run by a dedicated group of hard-working volunteer citizens who contribute significantly to the look and feel of our town. The committee is headed by a board that explores different projects and determines what it would take to bring them to life — whether that means building benches or tables for a park, staining wooden structures to keep them neat and tidy, weeding and maintaining plantings, or painting and upgrading the signs and decorative boats along our waterfront.
Once projects are approved by the city, volunteers procure the needed materials using a city-provided budget, develop a timeline, and produce the results we enjoy every day as residents.
What They've Done for Southport
You've seen their work — you may just not have known it. Tourists notice it in the tidy areas along the pier and Yacht Basin, at the roundabout heading toward the ferries, and in the beautifully kept waterfront and signage along Bay Street. The next time you admire a freshly painted sign or a well-kept park bench, there's a good chance a volunteer put in the hours to make it happen.
Get Involved
All citizens are welcome to participate! The committee hosts monthly work days on the first Saturday of each month, September through June, meeting at the annex near the old jail. Work days begin at 9:00 AM and wrap up after about two hours.
It's a great way to give back to the community we love — and to spend a morning with neighbors who care about keeping Southport beautiful.
